Real life, real jobs: a wage-slave's lament...

nighty's picture

OK, I'm posting this in my blog, not tied to the project, since most of this is off topic as far as the project is concerned. I'm just doing this update to emm... well... ironically, explain the lack of updates. Because seriously, quite some time has gone by since our last one. Some people might say the project is dead in the water. Usually I'd be the first to agree; my life is filled with projects which I optimistically started, yet never seem to finish. However, upon closer inspection, this project might not be as dead as it appears... Read on... ;)

OK, so what's the deal then? Well, quite frankly, both me and heavyg are pretty tied up in our day jobs right now. A couple of weeks ago, we were given the task to write some software that handles part of the financial business-end of possibly lots of future clients. It's one of those situations where you write a large piece of software, do one big public demo on a live project, and hopefully you haven't fucked up. Because dozens of potential customers will be watching to see if you slipped up, made a mistake, wrote under-performing software that can't handle the load of a live project, or if it's safe to hop aboard. Naturally with such responsibilities comes a lot of time investment.

Using last week as an example: usually I work a leisurely 30 hours a week, keeping enough free time to do stuff like hang out with friends, watch some movies, work on some hobby projects etc... Last week I almost did 50. Heavy-G is worse of still: he's still finishing his grad school, usually works 16 hours a week, and he more than tripled his job related workload last week. So there you have it, little time left for hobby stuff lately.

However, we have found some nice stuff for the nMedia project. Our back-end seems to be covered by some nice piece of software brought to my attention by heavyg, who picked it up during a conversation with another colleague. Since he's already working on a post on said software I'm not gonna clue you guys in just yet. Don't wanna steal his thunder, so to speak. So anyway, right now the major stumbling block seems to be the GUI. We haven't made any diagrams or schematics yet, though I have some vague idea of how I envision it. Heavyg probably has his own vision as well, and I'd be wise to listen to his input 'coz the man sure has some good ideas...

Well, that's it for today's update. Hopefully we can pick up the pace again once our day job settles down. Wish it were different, but last I heard, unless you work in the porn industry, you usually don't get paid to do your hobbies...
